Why hire a Nutrition Expert?

THE IMPORTANCE OF FITNESS AND
NUTRITION EDUCATION IN
YOUR ORGANIZATION'S EMPLOYEE WELLNESS PROGRAM
The number of adults in the U.S. who are obese has doubled over the past 40 years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 66 percent of American adults are either overweight or obese. Obesity plays a key role in the development of most chronic health conditions. Per cost employee annual health costs have almost doubled since the late 1990s.
For employers providing the majority of health insurance costs, such increases have outpaced affordability. The indirect costs of obesity include decreased productivity and an increase in absenteeism.
Research demonstrates that as a person's body mass increases, their utilization of health care costs increases. On average, health care costs for obese workers are 36 percent higher than those for employees with normal or healthy weights. Medication costs for obese workers are 77 percent higher. Prescription drug costs are rapidly increasing, however, many of the most commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals are for preventable conditions related to life-style choices.
So, how does a corporate wellness program encourage employees to lose weight in an effort to combat rising costs while improving the health, happiness and overall well-being of their workforce? How should a company increase worker morale, productivity and recruit top candidates to their organization? By hiring on-site, motivational professional nutrition and fitness experts.
Licensed nutrition professionals, such as DTRs and RDs and licensed professional counselors (LPCs), as well as certified personal trainers
can educate your employees at work. Nutrition and fitness experts on-site teach employees life-long strategies for making changes. In an employee wellness program, employees are educated to make healthier food choices and increase their level of physical activity for improved cardiovascular fitness, flexibility and strength. Such changes result in improvements in body composition and therefore a decrease in obesity related conditions. People with healthy life-style habits have the ability to reduce their weight, cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar, and therefore their risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some forms of cancer.
